They just followed you around, they're removed, we got them from creating a new pre-searing char.

Theory: The "present" was called "Birthday Present," IE, Guild Wars Aniversary present. Guild Wars came out the 28th of April 2005. They launched the pets on the 27th.
I think they launched the pets too early and decided, since hardly anyone had seen them, that they would just remove them. |

There are different variations of them, and they are all marked in either Gold, Purple, or White. Shiro and Prince Rurik are the only gold ones that I saw, so I don't think there's much need to make them a "rare" drop if they'll only be around for 1 day.
I certainly hope they don't cost 500k! Then only wammo's and 55 monks could buy them. |
